The Michigan State Police released preliminary results from its annual Police Vehicle Evaluation, held Sept. 16-18, and a more detailed analysis will follow in a full report later. The 2024 pursuit-rated vehicles–all pickup trucks or SUVs, including two battery electric models the Chevrolet Blazer EV AWD and Ford Mustang Mach-E–were put through their paces.
The initial results share lap times, acceleration times, and braking data for each vehicle.
Chevrolet Pursuit-Rated Vehicles
MSP tested five vehicles from Chevrolet:
- Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L RWD
- Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L 4WD
- Chevrolet Silverado Z7X 4WD
- Chevrolet Silverado Z71 4WD
- Chevrolet Blazer EV AWD
Among the Chevrolet vehicles tested, The Chevrolet Blazer EV AWD produced the fastest 0-to-60 mph times, reaching 60 mph in just 5.17 seconds. It also reached 100 mph in 11.08 seconds, the fastest among its same-company peers.
Other results from the Chevrolet family in the 0-to-60 tests were the Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L RWD (7.69 seconds), Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L 4WD (7.94), Chevrolet Silverado Z7X 4WD (7.24), and Chevrolet Silverado Z71 4WD (7.39).
Although the Blazer EV AWD proved itself as the fastest off the line, on the other end of the spectrum it was the Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L RWD that was the best Chevrolet in braking, which is measured in projected stopping distance from 60 mph. It stopped the shortest, 130.4 feet.
Other results from the Chevrolet family in the braking evaluations were the Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L 4WD (132 feet), Chevrolet Silverado Z7X 4WD (144.2 feet), Chevrolet Silverado Z71 4WD (144.9 feet), and Chevrolet Blazer EV AWD (135.2 feet).
Dodge Pursuit-Rated Vehicles
MSP tested two vehicles from Dodge:
- Dodge Durango 5.7L AWD
- Dodge Durango 3.6L AWD
It was no surprise to find that between the two Dodge Durango models, the larger 5.7L produced the faster 0-to-60 times, recording a time of 6.67 seconds. The Dodge Durango powered by the smaller 3.6L hit 60 mph in 8.35 seconds.
In the braking testing, both stopped at nearly the same distance — 136.1 feet for the Dodge Durango 5.7L AWD and 137.3 for the Dodge Durango 3.6L AWD.
Ford Pursuit-Rated Vehicles
MSP tested five vehicles from Ford:
- Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.0L EcoBoost AWD
- Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.3L Hybrid AWD
- Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.3L AWD
- Ford F150 Police Responder 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD
- Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD
Within the Ford lineup, the Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD delivered the fastest 0-60 mph times with a mere 4.07 seconds and reached 100 mph in just 10.87 seconds.
Times for the other Fords, in the 0-to-60 mph test, included the Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.0L EcoBoost AWD (5.81 seconds), Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.3L Hybrid AWD (6.99), Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.3L AWD (7.64), and Ford F150 Police Responder 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD (5.69).
In the braking tests, times for the Fords’ results were: Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.0L EcoBoost AWD (129.4 feet), Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.3L Hybrid AWD (131.7), Ford Police Interceptor Utility 3.3L AWD (131.1), Ford F150 Police Responder 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD (159.65), and Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD (129.6).
Acceleration/Braking Leaders
According to the MSP data of the entire field of vehicles tested, the Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD had the fastest 0-to-60 mph, followed by the Chevrolet Blazer EV AWD and then the Ford F150 Police Responder 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD.
In the braking testing, the Ford F150 Police Responder 3.5L EcoBoost 4WD delivered the shortest 60-to-0 stopping distance, with the Ford Mach-E AWD a close second. The Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3L RWD had the third shortest stopping distance.
